'KOMBI'
previous
A month ago, English backpacker Alex stepped off a
plane from Bangkok and took a bus to Bondi Beach. He had it all: a Thai
beach tan, a backpack of dirty laundry and a long-term girlfriend who'd
waited five months to see him.
Now he's shaking like a cornered rabbit, surrounded by warehouses on some
lonely industrial estate in the dead of night, caught in the spotlight
of the door that's just opened ahead of him. He's covered in a layer of
sweat far grimier than any he wore back in Thailand, and he's scared -
very scared.
They've raced against the summer rains to get here. They've weathered
one of the biggest cyclones in Australia's recent history. So many odds
they've overcome, and it was all for nothing. In spite of everything,
the good times and the bad, it'll all end here.
And it all comes down to the camper van, a tired VW Kombi worth far more
than its rusting carcass betrays.
