Thomas is a lapsed Catholic living in the Home Counties
west of London. He's given up his career as a lawyer and now runs Yarrowside,
a centre for people with head injuries. One night, to the sound of a helicopter
scouring the neighbourhood, he finds a mute and terrified stranger hiding
in his shed. Believing the fugitive to be suffering from some kind of
amnesia, Thomas shelters the man from the Military Police, christens him
'Ness' and attempts to help him recover his memory.
Meanwhile, in the jungles of Rwanda, a mixed-sex platoon of elite British
Infantry is ambushed by rebel troops. In the chaos and 'friendly fire'
that follows, the platoon is all but wiped out. Days after the attack,
Corporal Scott Wilson wakes up in the Rwandan capital, one of only two
survivors. When he's grilled by a field psychologist, he begins to suspect
some form of cover-up. When he meets Corporal Miller, a member of another
platoon that saved his life, he wonders if he's losing his mind.
It's only once he's back on British soil that the cruel truth of it is
finally unveiled.
